Off of his 2017 EP album release Love Is Love, "Hey Jesus" redefines what it means to simply be human and what it means for Jesus to still love you for you. The video and song asks the hardest question that many LGBTQ+ people long to hear an answer for, "Does Jesus still love me?"
The video was directed by Trey Pearson and Megan Leigh Barnard and produced by Judson Ott Jackson. The music video features Boyonce, Ty Talley, Jack Feider, Doug Joseph, and Phil Wells.
Pearson was married to his wife, Lauren, and they had two children together. The couple separated in 2016 after seven-and-a-half years of marriage following Trey coming out as gay. He is still heavily involved in his children's lives.
In September 2016, Pearson was scheduled to perform at Joshua Fest, a "major Christian music festival". Pearson had announced his pleasure at being "the first openly gay artist to ever play a major Christian music festival". However, multiple staff members threatened to walk out if Pearson remained on the festival lineup. Pearson was removed from the lineup, but still performed with Five Iron Frenzy.
